What ingredients do i need to make banana bread?

Banana bread is one of the easiest and most delicious home-baked goodies you can make. It's also incredibly satisfying to whip up from scratch; being able to take basic ingredients from your cupboard and create something tasty that your family and friends will love is very satisfying. With that in mind, here is a guide to what ingredients you need to make banana bread.

The backbone of your banana bread will be, of course, ripe bananas. The riper they are, the sweeter and more flavourful your bread will be – when your fruits are spotted with brown spots, they are perfect for baking! You should aim to use around 3-4 bananas in order to give your loaf a strong banana flavour.

You will also need some flour in order to bind the other ingredients together, with white all-purpose flour usually being preferred by most bakers for this type of bake. It's important not to over-mix when adding the flour so as not to cause the dough to become too dense.

Finally, you'll need some baking powder (to help it rise), salt (to enhance the flavour), butter or oil (for added moisture) and eggs or egg whites (as well as leavening agents). The star ingredient, however, is sugar – this gives banana bread its unmistakably sweet taste. You can opt for white sugar for a classic flavour, or use light brown sugar or honey if you prefer a more caramelised version.

When it comes to adding spices such as cinnamon or nutmeg – these are totally optional and really depend on what kind of kick you'd like your loaf to have! Everything should then be mixed together until just combined before transferring the mixture into a greased loaf tin that has been lined with parchment paper before baking in an oven preheated at 350F/180C for around an hour or until golden brown and a skewer inserted into its centre comes out clean.
